An owner of a plastic carry bag factory was found dead at his house in Dharmpura on Tuesday night. His wife found him hanging from a ceiling fan on Wednesday morning.

The wife of the deceased said on Tuesday night, she stayed at a hospital where her younger son had been admitted following an ailment. Meanwhile, her husband, who was present alone at home, hanged himself, she added.

She said since the government had announced a ban on single-use plastic, her husband had been facing losses and was reportedly under mental depression as they were unable to repay the bank installments.

Assistant sub-inspector Sukhjit Singh, the investigating officer, said the Division number 3 police had initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). The body has been sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem.

Treat effluent discharge as per the norms: Ludhiana MC chief to dyeing industry

Municipal corporation commissioner Shena Aggarwal held a meeting with the Ludhiana Dyeing Industries' Association at the MC's Zone-D office on Monday. The commissioner has asked the dyeing industry to ensure that water discharged from their units is treated according to the laid down standards. Aggarwal said that the corporation would get the samples of the discharge checked and if those failed the test, then the sewer connection of the unit would be snapped.

The members of the committee formed by the municipal corporation General House, to verify the lists of civic body staffers (sewermen and sweepers) provided by the councillors, conducted a physical verification of employees at the municipal corporation's Zone-B and C office, on Monday. Councillor Gagandeep Singh Sunny Bhalla said some irregularities, including the absence of the date of joining and salary record, were found during the random checking.
