“Specified as a new standard interface connector for Ethernet applications by Profinet, the ix Industrial I/O connector series features optimised EMI and ESD shielding for data transmission up to 10Gbits.s, said the company, adding: “In addition to in-line connection, the in-line jack supports panel mounting.”

Called ix40G, it accommodates two panel thicknesses: 1.5mm and 2mm, and, as well as 10Gbit/s CAT6A cable, it supports 1Gbit/s CAT5e cable.

The plugs are available in IDC and solder types, and for the wire-termination unit and cable clamp are integrated into a continuous metal shell for EMC and to isolate that connection from cable loads.

Hirose claims a smaller footprint compared with RJ45 solutions. “Using the connector, manufacturers of Profinet-compliant devices can create more compact end devices,” said company sales v-p Mark Kojak.

ix Industrial series is compliant with the IEC 61076-3-124. The receptacles and plugs are offered with two keying code options, differentiating Ethernet according to IEEE 802.3 from other applications.

There are three receptacle variations: The upright right-angle type can be mounted in parallel with a pitch 10mm, the vertical type allows top mating, and the horizontal right-angle type is designed with a 5.7mm height – under half that of the companies RJ45. For robustness, the receptacle shell is mounted on the PCB with through-hole solder legs.
